Orkin's love for travel began with a bike trip she took from Los Angeles to New York City to visit the 1939 World's Fair. She also accepted an assignment in 1949, so she could go on a 36-day cruise to South America. However, it was in Europe where she produced some of her most memorable images. Orkin went on a press tour with the Israeli Philharmonic in 1951, where she lived on a kibbutz for several months, and also did a picture story about a little girl named Tirza. In London, she captured an image of two boys in Hyde Park titled "Brothers," which later appeared in "The Family of Man." In Florence, she photographed her classic image, "American Girl in Italy."
